| May 1st is considered Labor Day pretty much everywhere outside of the U.S. Okay, I guess it's only socialistic places. :) But in those places, I think it means something more than just getting a day off work. It means they keep working because their governments are failing them. That's right. Press on!
All joking aside, I do really want to celebrate it. So, in the words of César Estrada Chávez (not to be mistaken with Hugo Chávez): You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read. You cannot
humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who
are not afraid anymore.
And...just for kicks, a picture of my niece Hannah - the easiest and possibly the cutest baby in the word!!

| Note to self: Do not open the pressure cooker before the button drops!
Chung & Alice were making soup this morning for Michael Chinn's birthday party. I gave them ill advice on when to open the pressure cooker. Result: a very messy kitchen. BUT, at least we had a chance to do some long-overdue kitchen cleaning!

| A few months after moving to Macau - actually, in the thick of our immigration problems - a mesmerizing Korean historical drama started airing on TVB. The show was called ??? (Dae Jang Geum - Jewel in the Palace). The whole city would shut down whenever the show would come on.
"Can I get a bowl of beef brisket noodle? No tendon."
"SHHHH!! Cheung Gam is on! Okay, okay, bowl...noodle...tendon. Damn that Lady Choi!"
Well, I finally finished watching ??? last week with Jenny. *sigh* What a good show!
Both Jenny and I agreed that the ending was a little ... awkward, though. How would we have rewritten it? Well ... [SPOILERS TO FOLLOW AFTER THE PICTURES...this is a note for you, Wayman]

1. Jang Geum should never have on the fake-hair headpiece. Yuck! 2. The little girl was overkill. They should have just stuck with the Hollywood ending with just the two of them. Jang Geum just turned into this grouchy monster disciplining her daughter. And Sir Min kind of turned into this wimp. What's up with that?! 3. They shouldn't have explored the surgery part. That's just too much to stuff in the last episode. 4. And finally, they should have brought back Lady Han (as her sister, Ken). Even if it's in Jang Geum's imagination...because I think that would have offered closure in the sense that her life is okay now.
Watching this series made me miss Macau so much!! I wish I were there right now...so I can have meaningful discussions about the series & really know how to integrate it into our sharing. *sigh* | | |
| Bao and I have always considered Macau a quirky place for many reasons. Can you not be quirky when smashing 500,000 people into 24 square kilometers (15 Sq miles), then filling the place up with casinos and Portuguese egg tarts? Here's something I found interesting as I was looking through the Macau tourism website - the weather report scroll bar!
There are 3 distinct areas: Macau, Taipa, and Coloane. Macau is 2 km from Taipa, and Taipa is about 1.5 km from Coloane. So over the span of 5 km or so (including the land in-between bridges), we have 3 separate weather reports. That's the equivlant of saying "Well, we have cold weather and rain over the McDonald's on 15th, but the Safeway on 20th is about 1/2 a degree warmer with rain. However, the Target on 24th is cold, rainy and is a bit more windy.
I admire the Macanese for taking pride in what they have - no matter how small a space. They treat each area as a distinct district much in the same way larger countries view their provinces or states. But different weather reports? Cool!
